Graphics
The use of graphics for social media posts is a great way to boost engagement, especially in breaking news situations. Our station has prioritized creating our own social media graphics to pair with stories we write, as well as posting graphics created by Gray corporate for national stories. These three are examples of graphics I have made for WMTV, using Canva or Photoshop.
SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS/SHORTS
Short videos, especially vertical, have taken over the algorithms of most sites that feature video. Since starting at WMTV, I launched our TikTok account and use of Instagram reels. They provide a look into behind-the-scenes moments, banter with staff, and of course, the news.
INSTAGRAM STORIES
As a manager of the Missourian's Instagram account, one of my duties was to create Instagram story highlights for stories, as well as do live coverage of events. For this story, I used photos a Missourian staff photographer, Claire Hassler had shot about an infant with spina bifida and the device his family created to help him get mobile.
I also implemented a new series of Instagram stories titled "Photos of the Week". I posted this every Friday afternoon and showcased one photo from each day of the week, starting with one from over the weekend, and ending it with a photo from "Friday Night Sights" to highlight it. Friday Night Sights is a Missourian photo series that highlights the charm and energy of high school football, specifically the moments off the field. This performed very well throughout my time and usually had between a 92-98% completion rate, which was rare for our stories.

I had the opportunity to work with the Sedalia Democrat in Sedalia, Missouri for one week to help them come up with a better social media strategy, learn analytics and learn better video technique. I created an analytics report from their Twitter, Facebook and CMS and also made a how-to guide of how to read analytics in the future. I also helped them create an Instagram account, which gained 100 followers once my week was over. We also came up with a set of standards for each Instagram post.
